His solos are legendary,' Read said of the guitarist. 'You can hear his solo and know that it's him. He has a very good sense of melody.' Benick and Read met in the early 1970s, when Maryland native Benick moved to Indiana to join Kokomo-based rock band Nebula Spoon.
Read's band, Pure Funk, featured Myers on bass and Asher 'Adam Smasher' Benrubi on vocals.Benick eventually migrated to Pure Funk, and the band changed its name to Roadmaster before issuing a self-titled album in 1976. Pop-rock hitmaker Todd Rundgren served as producer for three songs on that release.Benrubi exited the Roadmaster lineup to build a career as a radio DJ in Indianapolis St. Louis, making way for former Nebula Spoon vocalist Stephen 'Mac' McNally to sing on Roadmaster albums 'Sweet Music' (1978), 'Hey World' (1979) and 'Fortress' (1980).With a sound built for arenas, Roadmaster signed with Mercury Records and toured as supporting act for Blue Oyster Cult. The band opened shows for Rush, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton and other classic-rock heavyweights.' It was the passion for playing music, first of all,' Benick said of Roadmaster's impact era. 'But then seeing the appreciative faces out there in the crowd.

People digging your style, people digging your band, people digging your music. It was very satisfying in many ways.' Bass player Myers, original vocalist Benrubi and post-McNally singers Craig Watson and Frank Bradford are scheduled to be part of Sunday's show.McNally died at age 47 in 1998 following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.Between the demise of Roadmaster and the rise of Henry Lee Summer, Benick, Read and Roadmaster drummer Tim Berry spent 1983 playing dates with Detroit rock icon Mitch Ryder. On tour to promote Mellencamp-produced album 'Never Kick a Sleeping Dog,' Ryder and his Indiana supporting cast appeared on episodes of 'American Bandstand' and 'Solid Gold.' There's one more important name to connect to Benick: 'Leroy.'
If you ever wondered about Summer's 'Check it out, Leroy' line in Top 20 hit 'I Wish I Had a Girl' from 1988, Benick is Leroy — an in-band nickname devised by Summer. The best Roadmaster album sounds better than ever on this re-issue.One year on and it's 1979, which finds Roadmaster back in the studio with producer Greg Riker and eager to make a full album in the style of the best tracks from 'Sweet Music'. Constant touring had honed Roadmaster into a very tight live outfit and the whole band were contributing to the writing, particularly drummer Bobby Johns who stepped up to write one song on his own and co-write another six.Opening with the swirling Styx-like multi-layered synths of Michael Read, the title track was another pomp classic, its thumping bass-line and pounding drums supporting the layers of guitars, keys and vocal harmonies. 'Hey World' features other infectious pomp rockers like the cleverly arranged 'Never Say Goodbye', the uplifting 'Say You Wanna Be With Me' and the wonderful 'Looking For The Day', each one with hooks aplenty and well-recorded melodic musicianship. There are more guitar-based moments too, particularly the adrenalin burst of 'Us Coming Back' and the direct hard rocker 'My Eyes Have Been Opened', on which Rick Benick shines brightly. The Bobby Johns song 'I'm On My Way' is probably the weakest link, being, possibly intentionally, a psychedelic Beatles pastiche, but the brilliance of the other songs and a terrific vocal performance from Stephen McNally make up for it. AgreeIf there's a fault with this album it's that it was too short, with just seven medium-length songs, a pleasant but hardly essential instrumental ('Rainbow Waterfall'), and the pseudo-live closer 'Good To Be Back Home', which rocks hard but clocks in at just over a minute and a half.
It’s still arguably their best album and sounds better than ever on this re-issue, my only other small gripe being that Dave Reynolds obviously didn’t get to talk to any of this line-up for the sleeve essay, which mostly repeats the text from the ‘Sweet Music’ re-issue and is based around the memories of original singer Asher Benrubi (a.k.a. Adam Smasher) and a 2001 interview with Toby Myers by the knowledgeable George Thatcher from the Glory Daze website.Phil Ashcroft. Latest Message: 11 hours, 47 minutes ago. Berny: Sorted! DescriptionSHOWCASING FRONTMAN Stephen ‘Mac’ McNally’s unique vocals, together with a brace of supremely melodic tracks, Roadmaster’s third album ‘Hey World’ is universally regarded as a high watermark of the genre. Indeed, it is a record that fuses supremely crafted melodic AOR with all the grandeur and magnificence of the greatest pomp rock bands of the era. Think Styx, Kansas, Trillion and Starcastle wrapped up into one glorious bundle of fun. Issued in 1979, the album showcases all the lip smacking components of prime pomp, with soaring lead vocals, multilayered harmonies, breathtaking arrangements and an extraordinary keyboard component. Touring with the likes of Ted Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult and Aerosmith, the ‘Hey World’ album helped to consolidate their reputation as one of the Mid-West’s hardest working and best loved bands.
It is a record that continues to offer up surprises even to this day. 24-bit remastering from original source tapes, 3,500 word essay about the making of the album, band involvement and additional photos spread out over a 16 page full colour booklet.
